Let Me Not Judge- Get Closer To God

Let Me Not Judge.

" Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. "

- Matthew 7:1-2 (NLT)

Hello Reader,

Thank you for exploring this verse with me today.

Sometimes, when we read parts of Scripture, the message can feel quite direct, and it may make us uneasy to realize when our actions don't align with its teachings.

Today's verse on judging one another is difficult for many, including myself.

In today's culture, negativity and insecurity are prevalent, prompting many individuals to judge others and spread rumors in response.

We often engage in this behavior without even realizing it.

Jesus teaches us that the same standard by which we judge others, we will in turn be judged ourselves.

...that alone should stop us in our tracks when we mistakenly judge or gossip about others.

Let's explore this verse today to learn from Jesus how to avoid the judgment trap and promote love instead of hatred.

A Little History...

This verse comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), one of the most well-known teachings in the Gospels.

In Matthew 7, Jesus addresses how we relate to others, especially in terms of judging their behavior or motives.

But this verse doesn't mean we should never discern right from wrong. Instead, Jesus is warning us against: Hypocritical judgment, Harsh, self-righteous criticism, and judging without mercy or without examining our own hearts first.

How to Apply It To Your Life...

Lead with Grace

Jesus reminds us that judgment often springs from pride or impatience. Instead of assuming the worst about others, lead with grace, curiosity, and compassion. Everyone has a story, and often what we see is only a small part of their struggle.

🔹 How to apply it: Before reacting or criticizing, pause and ask: “What might they be going through?”

Use a Merciful Measure

Jesus flips the script here. He warns that whatever standard you apply to others will be used on you, by others, and even by God. That’s a sobering call to mercy, empathy, and fairness.

🔹 How to apply it: When offering correction, ask: “Would I want to be corrected this way?”

Let God Be the Final Judge

Only God sees the full picture. When you let go of the need to judge or fix others, you free yourself to focus on your own growth and to trust God's justice and timing.

🔹 How to apply it: Resist gossip or harsh opinions.

When tempted to judge, shift the focus inward: “What can I learn from this moment?”

Let's Pray Together...

Dear God,

Help me overcome the insecurities that cause me to judge others. I know I wouldn’t want to be judged harshly myself, so teach me to extend the same grace and understanding I hope to receive.

When I feel tempted to criticize or speak negatively, remind me to pause and learn from the moment. Help me resist gossip, hold back unnecessary opinions, and trust You to be the righteous judge.

Open my eyes to see others the way You see them—with compassion, patience, and love. Give me the courage to choose kindness over criticism, and to build others up instead of tearing them down.

Amen.

Let's Put It All Together...

We should not judge one another; that's for God to do.

We need to reflect on our own intentions before commenting on someone else's actions.

If we put ourselves in the other person's place, we'll find there's no reason to place judgment on someone else.

We all make mistakes, and it's how we can recover and nurture friendships instead of sabotaging them.

Trust me, I fall prey to this too, and that's when I catch and correct my behavior before it can make matters worse.

What truly makes us better people is the knowledge and lessons we gain from our experiences.

Thanks again for joining me today as we take a piece of Scripture and apply it to our lives.

My heartfelt hope and prayer is that this inspires us all to become better individuals, spreading the love and message of Christ to everyone we encounter.

May our actions reflect His grace and transform the world around us.

Have a blessed week out there,

Quentin
