Guard Your Heart- Closer to God Newsletter

Through my experiences in life, I've come to realize that what we allow into our lives and how we respond to it significantly shapes our life's direction.

We make choices, and depending on various factors, those choices can either help or hinder us.

What can we do? How can we make good choices that make our lives better and live a life that aligns with God?

Today's verse highlights the importance of safeguarding what truly matters to us, ensuring that we are never led astray.

Let's venture into the Old Testament for a book I often visit when needed.

Proverbs beautifully captures the essence of timeless wisdom, offering a potent dose of common sense from one of history's most revered figures, King Solomon.

His insights inspire us to embrace clarity and understanding in our lives, guiding us toward thoughtful decision-making.

"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life."

Proverbs 4:23 · New International Version

Here's a Brief Background...

The essence of Proverbs is wisdom. This is highly valued in Solomon's teachings.

This book is a treasure trove of practical wisdom!

Proverbs offer invaluable insights that go far beyond mere sayings, helping us cultivate true understanding and common sense.

It provides a practical guide for anyone who wants to live a life of righteousness, wisdom, and integrity.

Let's Break It Down...

Your heart is so important to you.

Physically, it does it all.

It pumps lifeblood to all your vital organs, and it's the beginning and the end of the circulatory system in your body.

Think about it.

Your brain cannot function without the heart performing its role.

This is why the heart is located centrally in our bodies, protecting it from outside elements.

Your heart also serves as your mental core, the very seat of your values and emotions.

It is the place where your deepest feelings and beliefs converge, guiding your thoughts and actions.

Spiritually, you need to "Guard your heart above all else."

As the heart is "the core" of our being, we must protect it from the evils, temptations, and negativity surrounding us each day.

Why? "because it determines the course of your life."

Where our heart center goes, our minds and bodies will follow.

Our moral compass comes from our core being, and His Word is rich with guidance and powers that compass for our hearts to follow.

Let's Put It Into Action...

So, what are some ways to guard our hearts?

Here are some good ideas:

Study and Meditate on Scripture.

We will gravitate towards whatever we fill our minds and hearts with. God's Word is the best way to seek guidance and advice. The more time we spend in His Word, the better our lives will be. Try it.

Monitor your thoughts, habits, and media.

We live in a different world than long ago.

Information comes at us 24/7, like drinking from a fire hose!

Be mindful of what you allow into your mind, and reject any thoughts that contradict God's truth.

Could you ensure that the information you consume aligns with His Word, teachings, and values?

Pursue Righteousness.

Make it a goal to live the positive, constructive words of Jesus in your life. Reflect on His character daily in how you treat and respond to others. Remember to love rather than hate and spread positivity.

Create Godly Relationships.

Surround yourself with like-minded, faith-oriented people. Choose friends that encourage and challenge you in your spirituality. Remember another Proverb (27:17) - "iron sharpens iron."

To Sum it All Up...

Our path in life is governed by our hearts, which convey our values and morals.

Letting the world's teachings dictate what's in our core being is a losing battle.

We need to be on guard for our hearts, minds, and very souls.

What we choose to let in and consume is what we will reflect back on the world.

We can protect our hearts by welcoming the good and rejecting the bad.

When we achieve this, our path in life will be a righteous one.

Here's a Prayer For You...

Dear God,

I come to You, seeking strength to guard my heart against the temptations of this world.

I know that the direction of my life is shaped by the core of who I am—may it always reflect You and Your Word.

When I stumble and fall, lift me up with Your grace.

Clothe me in the armor of Your truth and wisdom so that I may stand firm and be a light for others.

Let my heart always lead me closer to You and deeper into Your love.

Amen.

I hope today's verse inspires you to guard your heart and course in life.

So many things come at us each day that it's hard to slow down and filter what is good and not so good for us in the long run.

If you see someone struggling, please pass this message along to them.

Remember, I'm always praying for you; continue to pray for me as well.

May His blessings be with you!
